About

The SFU Skeptics were founded in the Fall of 2009 to provide a community for skeptics, atheists, agnostics, and other freethinkers at Simon Fraser University. The group’s main mandate is to promote scientific and critical thinking, speak on behalf of students of no religious faith, work with religious groups, and to investigate fringe science and paranormal claims.

The group meets every Friday at 5pm at the Highland Pub to discuss upcoming events and to just socialize with like-minded people.

About Skepticism

Skepticism, often confused with cynicism, is a worldview that emphasizes using critical thinking and the scientific method to investigate the world and claims about it.

Skeptics tend to doubt the veracity of claims relating to ghosts and the supernatural, complementary and alternative medicines, religion, and psychics. While skeptics are open to new evidence about these and other topics, to date, the best scientific data has come out against most claims of the supernatural and paranormal.

About Atheism and Agnosticism

Atheists are people who do not have a belief in a supernatural god. While most atheists hold the slightest possibility that one could exist, they generally see no convincing evidence of one’s existence.

Agnostics are people who do not think it is possible to know beyond a doubt whether or not a god exists. Someone can be an agnostic atheist if they don’t believe in a god, but don’t know whether one exists or not.
